Joey's Starlight Concert

The highly anticipated "Starlight"concert finally made its way to Genting last Friday and Saturday. Glad I made the right choice of opting for the second show eventhough I ended-up burning a bigger hole in my pocket. You see, there wasn't any encore during the first night which resulted in many being disappointed and even hurled profanities to vent their frustration. Pay more, get more ( I guess) !

This is the 3rd Joey concert that I've attended and "Starlight" definitely outshone her past concert series. She has always been awesome in her past concerts but this time around, she has proven herself to be the undisputable HK cantopop queen !!! She has reached the same iconic level as Anita Mui, I dare say. Her powerful vocal never once falter, even when she's strutting on stage with the extremely well executed choreography. I'm in awe of her stamina, the way she worked the crowd, her sweet crystal clear voice, her fit figure, the way she boogie on stage...I luv every single thing about her. She can do no wrong !!!

There was never a dull moment at all !! Kudos to whoever that came-up with the concert rundown. The songs selection was excellent. In June, I went to Vincy and Eason concerts, too. Vincy still has a long way to go. Eason's concert fall short of my expectations. Too many Mando numbers. Things only started picking momentum during encore and that's already too late !

I can't wait for Joey's next concert ! How I wish Genting would bring Joey back in December for X'mas or New Year countdown !!! Can't get enough of Cho B !!! Joey rocks !!!

Here's the concert rundown :-

Vincy's concert at Genting

Vincy's concert at Genting

To be frank, I couldn’t think of much to blog about when it comes to Vincy’s concert. If it weren’t for the free tickets, I will never fork out a couple hundred RM for her show. The tixs ain’t cheap at all, alright ?! I was pretty skeptical when I came to know about her concert date at Genting. “Gau Pan Meh ?” That was the first reaction that came to mind. Let’s face it, the only female newcomer that has the caliber to hold a solo concert overseas is Janice. Other than that, Kary Ng, Stephy Tang and Ivana Wong may be able to attract the crowd in HK but no way can they pull the same stunt in Malaysia. Perhaps in China it might work to a certain extend but in this part of the region, forget it ! This includes Vincy, too. Not to say that they are not talented but it’s just that they still need more time and exposure to sharpen their skills and most important of all, they need more hit songs! Banking on just one or two hit wonders doesn’t do the trick.

My prediction really materialized coz my friends told me they’ve received calls from Genting offering them free tickets to Vincy’s concert. Even with so many free tickets being distributed, the turnout was still extremely poor. In the end, Genting’s staff grouped all the audience together so that the hall wouldn’t appear to be so empty. I dare say more than half that attended are actually non-paying audience.

To Vincy’s credit, she really put her heart and soul into her debut concert. Rundown was pretty well planned, too….with just the right dose of dance tunes and slow numbers. One good thing about Malaysians, they are never short of applause ! Her dancing was so-so (better than Miriam !) but her voice lacks power. She sounds alright during ballads but once the background music starts to jump a notch or two, her vocal would be completely drowned. Now, that’s something she really has to work on. Pretty boy, Ken Hung, faced the same problem as Vincy. Most gals are more preoccupied with his cute looks than to notice his flaw, I supposed.

My main attraction was the appearance of Kenny Kwan, who happens to be my fave heartthrob. I have liked him since Boyz days. After going solo, he doesn’t seemed to be making much headway even after releasing quite a number of solo albums. Lady luck still eludes him. Kenny’s voice is certainly not the greatest in town but compared to before, there is vast improvement but not enough to make him stand-out. He has the looks and very good attitude (I heard) but still lacks the killer songs that elevate him up to the next level. Until today, he never fails to sing “Fan Sau Pat Yiu Tai Pei Ngoi” in all his public appearances…. after all these years! He’s so short of hit songs. I really hope EEG would engage a few prominent producers/composers to help kick-start his solo career once again.

Joey Yung was in the audience, too. Kenny took a jab at Joey and said this when his song ended, “thank you for the applause…blah, blah, blah….especially to my fan in pink dress” and pointed at Joey! You can listen to it by clicking on the video clip above. I didn’t catch it on video but upon hearing that, Joey actually rushed to the front and played along by acting like a fan who had wanted to pass Kenny her “yeng gwong pang” but was blocked by the barricade.
