Vincy's concert at Genting

Vincy's concert at Genting

To be frank, I couldn’t think of much to blog about when it comes to Vincy’s concert. If it weren’t for the free tickets, I will never fork out a couple hundred RM for her show. The tixs ain’t cheap at all, alright ?! I was pretty skeptical when I came to know about her concert date at Genting. “Gau Pan Meh ?” That was the first reaction that came to mind. Let’s face it, the only female newcomer that has the caliber to hold a solo concert overseas is Janice. Other than that, Kary Ng, Stephy Tang and Ivana Wong may be able to attract the crowd in HK but no way can they pull the same stunt in Malaysia. Perhaps in China it might work to a certain extend but in this part of the region, forget it ! This includes Vincy, too. Not to say that they are not talented but it’s just that they still need more time and exposure to sharpen their skills and most important of all, they need more hit songs! Banking on just one or two hit wonders doesn’t do the trick.

My prediction really materialized coz my friends told me they’ve received calls from Genting offering them free tickets to Vincy’s concert. Even with so many free tickets being distributed, the turnout was still extremely poor. In the end, Genting’s staff grouped all the audience together so that the hall wouldn’t appear to be so empty. I dare say more than half that attended are actually non-paying audience.

To Vincy’s credit, she really put her heart and soul into her debut concert. Rundown was pretty well planned, too….with just the right dose of dance tunes and slow numbers. One good thing about Malaysians, they are never short of applause ! Her dancing was so-so (better than Miriam !) but her voice lacks power. She sounds alright during ballads but once the background music starts to jump a notch or two, her vocal would be completely drowned. Now, that’s something she really has to work on. Pretty boy, Ken Hung, faced the same problem as Vincy. Most gals are more preoccupied with his cute looks than to notice his flaw, I supposed.

My main attraction was the appearance of Kenny Kwan, who happens to be my fave heartthrob. I have liked him since Boyz days. After going solo, he doesn’t seemed to be making much headway even after releasing quite a number of solo albums. Lady luck still eludes him. Kenny’s voice is certainly not the greatest in town but compared to before, there is vast improvement but not enough to make him stand-out. He has the looks and very good attitude (I heard) but still lacks the killer songs that elevate him up to the next level. Until today, he never fails to sing “Fan Sau Pat Yiu Tai Pei Ngoi” in all his public appearances…. after all these years! He’s so short of hit songs. I really hope EEG would engage a few prominent producers/composers to help kick-start his solo career once again.

Joey Yung was in the audience, too. Kenny took a jab at Joey and said this when his song ended, “thank you for the applause…blah, blah, blah….especially to my fan in pink dress” and pointed at Joey! You can listen to it by clicking on the video clip above. I didn’t catch it on video but upon hearing that, Joey actually rushed to the front and played along by acting like a fan who had wanted to pass Kenny her “yeng gwong pang” but was blocked by the barricade.

Joey's Starlight Promo at Genting

Diva Joey was in town to promote her forth coming "Starlight" concert. Malaysia happens to be the first leg of her world tour. I was so relieved that once again, Genting is the organizer and not "the other blood-sucking organizer" from KL. Outdoor venue and indoor stadium sucks. To me, the "Arena of Stars" is and will be the best place to hold concerts. Apart from promoting her concert, she also took time to sign autographs. Joey looks so sweet and radiant in pink outfit - "mai yan pink lady"! Too bad, the session was too short !
Right after this event, I went off to Joey's "siu see mui", Vincy's maiden concert. Genting distributed lots of her free tickets to make-up the numbers. Better than performing to an empty hall, right ? My friend spared me a free tix. I believe almost 70% of the crowd that turned-up for her concert got the tickets for free. It was certainly a misjudgement for Genting. Vincy is still too "fresh" and her hit songs are only a handful. To her credit, Vincy did put-in a lot of effort in this concert. Clearly, her forte lies in ballad. Her voice drowns completely when singing fast numbers. With Twins heading for splitsville, I guess EEG is pretty keen to promote Vincy. Afterall, can't depend on solely on Joey,"the-money-tree". As predicted, Joey made time for Vincy's concert, too. Joey was waving her "glow stick" and swaying along to Vincy's songs. Kenny Kwan,Vincy's guest singer, even poked fun at Joey. She didn't stay for long. Left after a few songs. The next day, Joey headed back to HK to participate in the "512 Sichuan charity show."

Astro Wah Loi Toi Drama Awards - 2007

This is the 4th consecutive year Astro is holding the "Wai Lai Toi Drama Awards." It's getting harder each year to obtain the tickets. Tickets are scarce. It remains to be seen whether I'm able to secure the tickets next year. I'll be lucky if I do. Having religiously attended the event since 2005, I still have the urge to attend eventhough every year,it doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict the list of winners. As long as the artistes turn-up, the awards are in their hands !

Prior to the show, Kevin Cheng made a special appearance at Sunway Pyramid. Ray Lam who was originally scheduled to be there to promote his debut album, couldn't make it as he has forgotten to bring his passport to the airport and had to take another flight.I wasn't too perturbed. I was just happy Bosco turned up for the award ceremony. Bosco was his usual cheeky and dashing self ! Drool..........

After the show, the artistes attended the post celebration party at Mantra. Managed to catch a few pixs of them as they made their way to the bistro.
