Malaysia is the first leg after resuming the tour, followed by Canada and US. Joey actually arrived in Malaysia way earlier than usual, apparently taking a break to enjoy some time off with mommy dearest…chilling at various cafes around PJ/KL plus sightseeing at Batu Caves temple. I was lucky to catch hold of Joey to autograph my “Pretty Crazy” DVD and “Schrodinger’s Cat” CD.
Joey had a sold out show at Genting on 5th of November. Fans and those who have been deprived of concert enjoyment during the outbreak turned up in full force. The concert kicked started with Joey appearing in an LED heart shaped outfit, belting out 空港. The stage was pretty bare…certainly no match for the spectacular mega stage in HK, designed by Es Devlin. This is followed by the concert theme song medley, the starry night inspired bodysuit which she wore during her HK concert had been replaced with a different kind of blue tone bodysuit and cape. When Joey shouted out in glee “Welcome to my Malaysia concert. I’m so pumped ! I have waited for 2 years for this date! ”, it triggered the adrenaline rush in every fibre of my being and that’s the very reason I keep going to her concerts religiously for more than a decade. Joey’s voice is in top form although singing in Genting is challenging due to its high altitude location. Joey then appeared in a tuxedo to render 逃避你, followed by a piano solo of 啜泣. There is a blooper moment when Joey played on a wrong note but quickly regained her composure to finish the song. Joey shared she started the concert preparation a month ago, getting into shape, practicing her piano and dance routine. Joey mentioned she didn’t get to spend much time with her mom during the past 2 years, as she has been preoccupied with work in China. Joey got a bit teary -eyed when she mentioned about the personal hardship and upheaval everyone had to endure during the past 2 difficult years. It also made her cherish the opportunity to interact with the audience even more, striving to give her best during every performance. To echo the sentiment, Joey performed a a new song from Schrodinger’s Cat album, called 苦你了,
Next up is my least favourite part, the 桃色冒险 choreography in Japanese get-up. Glad that it was just a short segment. Joey put on her dancing shoes again for the
“Lovin U” medley. With just a couple of dancers and minus the Russian brass
band, it lacks the carnival feel. However, Joey retained her dance
routine with the mike stand. Donning a glistening silver gown, Joey then dived
into a string of her much-loved ballads. Almost everyone in
the audience was singing alone, swaying to the melody and lighting up their cellphones. Joey was clearly touched by the interaction
with the fans. She expressed that she belongs to the stage and live performance
gives her the strength and vigour to soldier on. At times when she feels
dejected, she gets comfort from the thought of having done the immensely
successful and amazing Pretty concert run in HK. She encourages the spectators to fly
to HK to watch her concerts. I concur – for best audio and visual
effects, you gotta experience it in HK.
The final part before encore is the power dance medley, where Joey hollered “let’s go crazy together” when the familiar “la la la” intro from “pretty crazy” started playing. The show concluded with Joey donning a long red dress for encore, fulfilling song requests from members in the audience. Concerts in Genting usually wrapped up after 2 hours, I am glad Joey’s lasted a little longer – 2.5 hours. Doing the math, I think Joey will be holding her next HK concert in another 2 to 3 years (25th anniversary concert, perhaps?).
