BIG BIG Channel app launch ceremony - Sunway Pyramid (26th November 2017)

PIXS COMING SOON....

“Big Big Channel” is a one-stop multimedia mobile app, featuring live streaming and clips of TVB dramas and artistes plus other major E-news. Having the app launch in Malaysia on Sunday, right after the TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2017 is perfect timing indeed.  It also serves as an opportunity for fans who failed to obtain tickets to the awards ceremony to see their fave celebrities. In conjunction with the launch, fans were asked to vote for their desired most popular TVB idol via the app.  Again, no surprises that Ruco walked away with the title.  The launch ceremony is obviously a huge thingy as all the top gun executives were in attendance, namely, Sandy Yu, Sherman Lee and Felix Toh.   As for the stars line-up, we have emcees Luk Ho Ming and Jarvis Chow, newbie Arnold Kwok, Elaine Yiu, Ruco Chan, Fred Cheng, Hubert Wu, Ali Lee, Natalie Tong, Lai Lok Yi, Samantha Ko and Joel Chan. Hana Kuk was not feeling well and had to pull out during the last minute (no show at the awards ceremony the night before). Hana has a hauntingly beautiful melancholic voice (not forgetting, pleasant looking) and I really look forward to see her but it wasn’t meant to be.  For the record, Luk Ho and Jarvis tried their best to explain the app features but frankly, they were too long winded and could not hold my attention span. However, having checked out the app content for the past few weeks, I have to say that the app is a bonus to any hardcore TVB fans. It is very informative, with lots of latest buzz about TVB. Ruco divulged that he uses the Big Big Channel platform to share his concern about the catastrophic Penang flood last month.  Ruco’s grandma hails from Penang.  Initially, I was glad that the launch lasted longer than anticipated but it soon becomes extremely draggy.  The only time I am fully alert was during Hubert’s performance (love The Exorcist's Meter theme song to bits !) and the witty Q&A with Ali, Elaine and Ruco.  Elaine seems to have resuscitate her career with her Kate role in “The Unholy Alliance” and thus far, 2017 has proven to be a windfall year (from clinching the favourite character award in Singapore to winning the favourite supporting actress in Malaysia, as well as her recent victory at the 2017 Yahoo Buzz Award).  If she snags the favourite supporting actress award in HK next January, then she would have come full circle and hopefully, move to the next stage of her career as the leading lady (which she once held when she first made her foray in acting more than a decade ago).  The recent promotional poster of Justice Bao in TVB’s 2018 calendar seems to indicate that she will co-lead with Nancy. Good luck to Elaine.  Ali is obviously TVB’s next blue eyed-girl, based on Starhub’s TVB awards result and her non- stop exposure lately. I find her acting mediocre at best and nowhere at the leading actress level, for now.  Seeing her in-person, I can understand why many fans proclaimed that she is the new TVB Goddess, especially among male supporters.  She seems to exhibit an alluring subtle vixen charm, just like the judge character she potrays in “Legal Maverick”.  Arnold Kwok looks good and lean in “Nothing Special Force” but now, he looks too beefy and face much too puffy for my liking !  And I am surprised that he already has a fanclub in Malaysia ! Hopefully, the local helper is not who I think he is (that particular person is notorious and not-too-honest in selling concerts and fans meeting tickets).

TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2017 (TVB 马来西亚星光荟萃颁奖典礼2017) - Arena of Stars Genting Highlands on 25th November 2017

The outrageous outcome of Starhub TVB awards 2017 resulted in numerous brickbats from TVB viewers and left me pretty much dumbfounded. Both Ali and Jacqueline’s triumph were really dubious.  Then again, one might argue that it’s a popularity poll ( also about who TVB is keen on pushing to the next level), so acting skill is not the deciding factor.  This year, the voting period of TVB Malaysia Star Awards was reduced from the usual four/five weeks to merely three weeks.  To boost the hype of this much anticipated yearly event, TVB assigned two teams of artistes to cover several Chinese dominated locations in Malaysia – KL, Ipoh and Penang.

I only wish for three things at the Malaysia awards ceremony :– 1) Ali does not win the fave actress award. Anyone but her.  2) Kate and Kent walk away with the favourite drama couple award 3) Kate and Kent win best supporting actress and actor.  Well, getting 1 out of 3 hits ain’t too bad, I guess.  I let out a smile when I saw Jessica Hsuan in the attendees list and felt relieved. My choice is actually Kristal Tin. She did a fabulous job in “Destination Nowhere”. Nevertheless, I am fine with Mall Jeh getting the award, too. Ali can wait for a few more years (that is, if she improves).  I thought that the fave drama couple would be a close fight between Saving-Cherrie and Kent-Kate.  Since Vincent and Natalie won the award in Singapore, I had high expectation that it would be a homerun for Joel and Elaine but unexpectedly, Nancy Wu and Ruco Chan snatched it from them.  They were so awkward on stage – the dunno-what-to-say-and-let’s–get-this-over-with expression were written all over their faces.  In the past, the top four winners (favourite supporting actor/actress and favourite actor/actress) will always get the favourite character award as well but not this year !! No surprises coz I was already doing the math in my head when I saw the number of participating artistes vs the number of awards available. Hence, I have already anticipated the character awards will be increased (15 to 17 this year….heck ! perhaps it will hit 20 next year !). I was thrilled with Joel’s victory and of course, Elaine’s as well. Can’t  deny that “Kate” was a breakthrough role for Elaine but I hope in the future, she would cut down on turning on the waterworks. Yeah, I know she is a natural and convincing in crying scenes but it’s time to challenge more diversify roles.  Favourite actor – my pick has always been Vincent Wong. From being Neway’s first contracted singer to joining TVB at the later stage of his career, Vincent never ceased to amaze me with his stable and versatile acting ability. The award was handed to Sam Gor aka veteran actor, Miu Kiu Wai, who came with wifey, Jamie Chik.   Yeah, no complains about the result.  Vincent’s chance will come in January 2018 during the HK awards (I hope).  Worth a mention is his co-star in “Legal Maverick”, Sisley Choy. I used to be one of her harshest critics but now, I am sold !  She has shown so much improvement in all her recent works.  That’s what I called professionalism. Taking note of her weaknesses and work on perfecting them. Good for Sisley ! If she sustains the momentum, best actress is not far from her reach, given a few more years.  Favourite drama accolade goes to “Legal Maverick”. I suspect “The Unholy Alliance” garnered the most votes (Malaysians seem to favour this drama a lot) but the executives prefer to award it to “Legal Maverick”.  Plot wise, both series have glaring holes during the last few episodes, with "Legal Maverick" emulating Marvel-like superhero theme story line and the unrealistic turn of events in "Unholy Alliance" after Rainman's cover has been blown.  And why the hell is there zero recognition for Nina Baw when the quota is used on less deserving folks like Rebecca, Lok Yi and Samantha in the favourite characters category ??

“The Sisterhood Travelling Gang” clinched the favourite variety show award.  I used to like the camaraderie displayed by these gals but frankly, now it’s a turn off.   Excessive self-publicity is annoying. Time to tone it down a few notches, ladies.  Most improved favourite actor is my choice, too – Matthew Ho.  Cute and delivers ! Zoie ain’t too bad although I had predicted that Roxanne Tong would win.  This year, I find all the TVB drama theme songs nominated were below expectation.  If Hana's song in "Line Walker 2" had been nominated, my vote would have gone to that song. I am pleased that Kayi Tam didn't win coz somehow, I couldn't stand her mushy version. I prefer Lowell Lo's original arrangement.  Fred Cheng is in the list of performing stars, again ! Can we not have him next year ? Invite Alfred Hui, please. Hubert’s “The Exorcist Meter” theme song is so catchy and I like this soft spoken dude even more now. His following in Malaysia has also expanded tremendously.  Fans turn-out appears to be more formidable than Ruco now.  The other bonus for me is having my favourite trio – FAMA and Dodo Cheng as the emcees again this year. Thumbs up for that decision ! Mayanne Mak does well but I hope Luk Ho will not be a permanent feature in the coming TVB Star Awards.  Suffice to say, I am satisfied with the major top 5 results (supporting actor/actress, favourite actor/actress and best drama).
