Whoa....so many firsts in this year's TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2015 !
For the first time :-
1) two TV Queens were crowned.
2) "My Favourite TVB Characters" increased from 15 to 16.
3) additional TVB theme song award selected by MyFm radio station.
4) a presenter presented the award to herself (Priscilla Wong).
5) a Malay singer performed at the award ceremony (Shila Amzah)
6) first acting award for Matt Yeung.
7) first acting award for Elaine Yiu after slogging for 13 years.
8) smart phone app was used for voting (and the IT team should be fired !) as IOS app was delayed for weeks.
9) announcement was made in the Malay language for "Best Supporting Actor" winner, resulting in puzzling looks from the Hong Kong artistes.
Having two TV Queens naturally did not go down well with most fans, many finding it ridiculous and retorted that TVB is dividing more "pork" than usual this year. I find Nancy's acting to be consistently stable but Kristal still has the upper hand. Nevertheless, I am fine with both ladies sharing this honour. So long as it's not Liza Wang. It was a morale booster for Nancy before facing the "battle" at home ground on the 13th Dec.
No surprise that Ruco finally snagged the TV King title in Malaysia. I had anticipated this but truth be told, I am no fan of Ruco. Oh yeah, he can act alright but is he as good as his supporters made him out to be ? I do not share the same sentiment. However, I have to admit that Ruco has pretty strong support base in Malaysia and Singapore. This is after all, a popularity poll (70% - audience voting, 30% - TVB panel judges). It's perplexing that TVB did not arrange for Ruco to fly over for this ceremony. Don't tell me shooting in Okinawa is so rush, to the extend that TVB could not free him for a day or two ?
"Captain of Destiny" won My Favourite TVB Drama Series....obviously, Ruco's fans played a major role in ensuring this drama stays in the forefront of the voting. Unfortunately, the male leads - Ruco and Tony (misplaced his passpport) were both conspicuously absent. Elaine Yiu, Mandy Wong and Matt Yeung represented the cast of "Captain of Destiny" to deliver the thank you speech.
My vote goes to Louis Cheung for the "My Favourite TVB Actor in a Supporting Role" but again, I know that Benjamin Yuen (a frequent visitor to Malaysia) would win this. Benjamin does have the potential, so this victory should pave the way for Benjamin to move to leading roles.
"My Favourite TVB Actress in a Supporting Role" has been my focus since the day voting started on the 16th Dec. I am extremely eager to see Elaine walk away with this award but I know that Rosina Lam is a strong contender. Both had a 50-50 chance although I wished that Elaine had been nominated for her imperial consort character (which has won rave feedback) instead of Lawyer Cheung role. My heart was pounding so hard and fast when Shila Amzah was about to announce the winner....I kept muttering under my breath..."please let it be her, please let it be her". Words could not expressed how thrilled I am when Shila Amzah read out the name...."Elaine Yiu." Oh, YES !! What a defining moment for Elaine's fans! In my past blog postings , I have voiced my never-ending resentment about TVB execs sidelining Elaine again and again. Finally, the wait is over after 13 freaking long years. Better late than never. What makes it even sweeter is that Elaine bagged two awards that night, the other being "My Favourite Character Award." The next hurdle would be the HK TVB award a fortnight from now. With Rosina out of the nominees list, I hope that TVB doesn't pull a fast one by awarding it to veteran star Helena Law Lan. Rooting for ya, Elaine !! You go, girl !!!!
Another well-deserved winner is Matt Yeung (who is from the same batch of acting training class as Tavia Yeung). Matt has proven his worth in recent years. Stop giving him and Elaine the "ex-girl friend/boy friend " roles already !! Tracy Chu won the Most Improved Actress category, who happens to be my top pick. I like her personality. She appears to be a very grounded person. I'm so bloody thankful it wasn't Grace Chan ! In fact, I was relieved that Grace was not invited to this ceremony !
Of all people, I would not have expected seasoned travel host, Tony Hung to encounter a passport blunder that resulted in him skipping this ceremony ! This is so surreal!! The best looking gal that night is none other than Tavia Yeung. She looks absolutely stunning ! Many fans were not pleased with the attendees line-up, lamenting that there is a lack of leading stars as opposed to the entourage who had participated in the Starhub awards ceremony earlier.
The performers for the night were Jinny Ng, Fred Cheng, Stephanie Ho, Hubert Wu, Alfred Hui (yay !! finally get to see him in-the-flesh), Jonathan Wong, Maria Cordero, FAMA (yay ! I couldn't believe I am seeing them again ! C-kwan and 6-Wing were making funny faces at me when they spotted me in the crowd ! They were such a riot in Dodo Cheng's "Do Jie Goes Shopping". C- Kwan's punchline - "None of your business class ! ".
Put it this way, whatever grouses I had about the award show was quickly buried with Elaine's triumph that night. Plus, seeing FAMA never fails to perk-me-up !
