Astro and Tesco's (Brit Hypermart) CNY collaboration must have
chalked up pretty impressive sales figures last year. The same promotion is
doing its round again in several states in
Malaysia. Aside from the attractive bargains at Tesco, Astro is
conducting a back to the 80s theme carnival outside the premises. This is
definitely music to my ears coz like the previous year, TVB artistes will be making special apperances at these road shows.
The week before, we had Rosina Lam and Pierre Ngo. Now it’s Benjamin
Yuen, Katy Kung and Matt Yeung’s turn.
All are no strangers to Penang.
Matt and Katy (on a personal trip to visit buddy , Elaine Yiu) were in
Penang a couple of years ago during the “Outbound Love” drama shoot. They were
all decked in 80s outfits. Ben, in matching headband and wristband plus a denim
jacket, looks like someone out of Madonna’s 80s MTV. Katy is all sugar and
spice and everything nice in her red ensemble (great CNY colour coordinates
too!). Having just completed “The Executioner” a few weeks ago, seeing Chi Chau
(Matt) and Siu Mun (Katy) together gives off the feeling that both were time
travelling from the Ming Dynasty to the
roaring 80s. I personally find “The Executioner” to be one of the most gripping drama of
2015-16. It started off rather slow and boring but as it progresses, the plot is far more engaging than the
crappy “Captain of Destiny”.
Katy entertained the crowd with a Ah Niu’s Mandarin number “愛你等於愛自己”.
Ben seems to have a penchant for Mandarin songs, too. I don’t recall seeing him
performing Cantonese tracks before. Ben sang Lee Hom’s “對面的女孩看過來”. After
their sweet victory at last year’s Malaysia TVB awards, both Benjamin and Matt
have gotten significantly more exposure lately. I am happy for Matt's recognition. He had slaved for donkey years in TVB. It's sort of a career reboot for Matt and it's high time TVB grooms him to leading
roles. Ben has already promoted to playing protagonist /central characters
since last year. Katy has consistently
churned out good performance since her debut, hopefully TVB would give her more meaty roles. Ben is such a gem ! During the kicking slippers game
session, Ben graciously helped one of the female fans to carry her handbag
(seen in my pix below). When the emcee commended Ben for his action, he
cheekily replied, “Special offer for today .” For the record, Matt, Katy and Benjamin are all super duper nice and have no airs despite their celebrity status.
