The special appearance of TVB
artistes, Elaine Yiu, Joyce Tang, Katy Kung and Ben Wong lured me to the 2017 NTV7
Golden Awards. I had anticipated the ceremony to be uneventful since I’m
not familiar with the dramas nominated. Little did I, along with the rest
of the audiences had expected to walk out of Setia City Convention Centre in
utter horror over the debacle right before the ceremony ended. Frankly,
everyone (from presenters, emcees, nominees to guests) did quite a laudable
job. Half-way through the show, I even told my friends that the standard of
local award show has surprisingly elevated.
Good grief ! I spoke too soon!! During the presentation of the
final award (Best TV Drama), the guest presenter-cum-major sponsor,Pamoga,
really went overboard in promoting her product. Initially, I was actually impressed
by her ability to speak Mandarin (although her fashion sense is extremely
questionable). If she has had the decency to sell her product in a professional
and appropriate manner which complies to the protocol of a live event, it would
have been fine but no ! this obnoxious and deranged lady had to hog the lime
light and treat it like her own bloody talk show ! She was downright crass and
insulting our eyes and sight with her endless trash-talk. It was simply
revolting. Thank God quick-thinking Jordan Voon (2017 Best Actor winner) managed to coax
her into presenting the award first before spewing more garbage from
her mouth. Her antics on stage was unfitting for a founder of a so-called
multi-million organization and really put Malaysians to shame. Never seen such
a farce at a live event before! Next time, I hope Prima Media vets their
organizers carefully. Otherwise, all the
effort and credibility of the show goes down the drain over the overbearing and
silly antics of one vain sponsor. As expected, netizens bombarded NTV7’s FB
page with nasty comments after the show.
Pamoga really turns out to be the biggest “winner” of the nite !
Elaine Yiu dazzles in a Kevolie
sponsored golden gown. Elaine and buddy,
Katy Kung, jointly presented the awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
Elaine expressed the desire to act as someone who suffers from multiple
personality disorder (James McAvoy’s spectacular performance in “Split” comes to mind) or take on a tomboyish role. Kate wants to jump out of comfort zone and be the next action star. If presented with a chance to collaborate with local artistes, Katy’s pick is Crystal Lee.
Elaine would like to work with Angelica Lee. After Raymond Wong’s participation in an NTV7
drama with Debbie Goh last year, hopefully, Elaine would be the next to follow
suit. Elaine’s next project in the pipeline is a new comedy drama with veteran
Dominic Lam, Lai Lokyi and Nancy Sit.
Ben Wong and Joyce Tang are
seriously two artistes who look even better as they aged. They took part in a
skit with the local artistes and also presented the coveted Best Actor/ Best
Actress awards. Click on the clip to watch Ben and Joyce’s witty banter. Veteran actor, Jordan Voon, took home the Best
Actor honour after a lapse of 18 years and Karena Teoh emerged as the Best Actress. Best Drama goes to “3.15
AM”. Media’s Choice Award (and a new Proton car) is presented to Yeoh Yann Yann
(never liked her). My fave dude, Fabian
Loo (I could hardly recognized him…used to his clean-cut boy-next-door look)
won the “Best Newcomer” accolade. Cheng Kam Cheong walked away with the “Lifetime
Achievement Award”. Jeffery Cheng was
his usual charming-self at the red carpet (flashing his famous sparkling million dollar
smile) and girlfriend, Yise Loo, also presented the award to Orange Tan for
Best Drama theme song. It was quite an awkward moment for Yise since she is
also being nominated in the same category.
Guest performers are Penangite
Jeryl Lee Pei Ling (I like her voice) and Penny Tai’s protégé, Shio, who
composes her own songs (non- mainstream songs are not my cup of tea). A total of 37 awards were presented and the
show drags for way too long. It ended around midnite. Cheryl
Lee did well as the host of the evening. Would have been better if she had a
partner to co-host the event with. Can’t say the same for Orange (who hosted
the red carpet with Emily Chan)…I find her kinda cocky. Orange and Gary’s interaction was distasteful
and hardly funny. For avid fans, the red carpet is the place to be before the
show kicks off. Everyone would be
jostling for the prime pic-snapping and celeb-cheering position. Here, I only
see a handful of enthusiastic fans. Pixs shared by NTV7 in their social media
is a joke – so darn blurry.
