The concert ticket that could
allegedly fetch a whopping RM11K in the black market finally took place last
weekend at Axiata Arena. Yup, I’m referring to the 3 sold out shows of Jacky
Cheung “A Classic Tour”- Malaysia stop. I have attended Jacky’s live performances
in the past but his concerts have never caused a furore of such magnitude
before. Frustrated fans who failed to secure tickets vented at the local
organizer’s social media, leaving thousands of derogatory comments. Ticket touts (very rampant these days) were
having a field day, reselling tickets at exorbitant rates. I’d rather watch his
Bangkok concert than pay several folds to the scalpers. Many have also
fallen prey to scammers and ended-up a few thousand ringgit poorer plus no
tickets !
Can’t deny that Jacky’s
concerts have always been great but I wouldn’t say it is spectacular. This time around, I was totally blown away by
how good the concert was. It was nothing short of amazing and perhaps the best
I have ever been, to date. You really
have to salute Jacky’s professionalism. He insists on having a four-sided (360
degrees) stage for all his shows, which is common in HK but not for tours
abroad due to the massive expenses and manpower involved. The stage transforms
non-stop from all angles and coupled with the eye-popping special effects
(props, visuals and lighting), it keeps audience spellbound for a solid 3
hours. Everything was done at such precision and perfection that it feels as if
the stage has a mind/life of its own. I
was surprised to learn that Jacky had conceptualized the stage. Glowstick that synchronized to the music and colour
change were also distributed to the audiences.
The scene is oh-so magical ! The show commences at 8 pm sharp and as expected,
many latecomers were caught off guard. At 56, age is clearly not a barrier to Jacky
as he is still in his element. Vocal remains smooth and his stamina, even
stronger!! He dances with such vigour. Jacky’s musical journey have spanned 34
years but if you noticed, he always aim for breakthrough and there is no
compromises when it comes to live shows. He could have taken the easy way out and still
make millions but he insists on delivering the best to his fans. It’s definitely
worth every penny spent – no complains about the ticket price. That’s the qualities which sets him apart
from other Cantopop singers and the reason Jacky is still the undisputed “God
of Songs”. Many speculated that this
could be Jacky’s swansong concert since he is pushing 60 soon. Fortunately, Jacky assures fans that he has
no plans to retire. However, it is unlikely for him to perform on a four sided stage in another 4-5 years from now. Perhaps in HK but not abroad. It is physically damn tiring !
The Malaysia leg marks his 132nd show since the
tour kicked-off in Beijing on October 2016.
Jacky mentioned that he does not get to interact much in Cantonese
during his world tour but feels right at home in Malaysia coz he could
expresses himself freely in Cantonese. There is no way he could cover all his chart topping ballads but suffice to say, many classics made it to his rundown. Mandarin and newer songs were kept to a
minimum, amen to that ! This concert
will be etched in my memory for a long, long time. Personally, I think it is impossible for
other Cantopop acts to surpass Jacky’s standards…be it in terms of vocal
prowess or showmanship. This concert is not classic, it is EPIC !!!
