My Astro Show Power Music Awards (Feb 22, 2009)
If there was any doubt in my mind about Khalil Fong’s ability, it all vanished when I saw him performing live at “My Astro Show Power Music Awards” concert. This Hawaiian borned multi-instrumentalist-cum-composer is totally at ease strutting his stuff on stage and belting out his Mando hit songs. Don’t let his geeky appearance fool ‘ya coz beneath that exterior, he has a beautiful and soulful voice. First off, her enthralled the crowd with his latest track “如果愛 (If Loved) ”, followed by the immensely popular “愛愛愛” , “Sing Along Song” before jumping into an acappela version of “How Deep is Your Love” with homegrown talent, Nicholas Teoh. This show is actually a prelude to MyFm/Astro’s music award ceremony, expected to take place same time next year. 20 songs will be vying for the top 20 golden hits, plus best newcomer, favourite male and female singer as well as golden hit song of the year. After 2 hours, it’s finally Kay’s turn. She performed “Chung Mo Yin 钟无艳 ” & “17 degrees - 17 度”. Of course, I don’t think anyone would ever let her end the show without singing the monster hit, credited for her newly attained stardom – “Hei Tip Kai囍帖街.” Contrary to earlier report about singing off-key during live shows, Kay hit every single note perfectly. I actually worry for my fave singer, Joey. If Kay continues to improve (esp. in showmanship), she is going to give Joey a serious run for her money. Other performers that turned-up for this even are Z-Chen, Nicholas Teo, Wan Qian, Hao Ren, Yise Loo (M’sia), TOR and Chin (who coincidently bears a stricking resemblance to Kenny Kwan Chi Ban) - see pix (both from Thailand), Danson Tang, Liang Wen Ying and Xing Guan San Shao (Taiwan).
