TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2016 (TVB 马来西亚星光荟萃颁奖典礼2016) - Genting Highlands Arena of Stars- 26 November 2016

The annual “TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2016” TVB馬來西亞星光薈萃頒獎典禮2016 was once again held at Arena Of Stars, Resort World Genting Highlands and it was a night to remember for the wrong reasons. This year, a total of 14 categories were given out (the “On-Line Most Beloved Artiste” award was added a few weeks after the launch of the mobile voting app).  Obviously, TVB had to create another category to ensure the “pork” (er, I mean, awards) is equally distributed. Having attended the ceremony since its inception in Malaysia in 2004 until now, I have to say this year’s celebrities line-up has the least star appeal.  You must be living in Mars if you had not noticed that TVB is seriously lacking charismatic and capable leading artistes and desperately trying hard to promote the annoying Grace Chan (cringe…), Sisley Choi (well, at least, she made a little progress), Ali Lee (very stiff in “Law Dis-Order), Moon Lau (acting is quite okay but surely has not reached the extend of receiving awards) and Bruce Lee wanna-be Philip Ng (seriously????).

The few highlights of the evening are:-

1)   Having 5-star emcee Dodo (Carol) Cheng and FAMA (6Wing and CKwan) hosting the show in Malaysia for the first time.  In-fact, they were the emcees at the “Singapore Starhub TVB Awards” last month and will continue to do so in the Hong Kong TVB awards presentation on Dec 18. 

2) Joyce Tang finally bagged two awards after slogging for 21 years in TVB. I voted relentlessly and is delighted with the outcome. For a minute there, I thought TVB would give "My Favourite TVB Actress in a Supporting Role" to Grace Wong instead.  I was relieve when Grace Wong as announced as the winner of "On-Line Most Beloved Artiste" because that indicates that Joyce stands a good chance of becoming the Best Supporting Actress.  To be fair, Grace Wong has also shown tremendous improvement and can't deny that her popularity has rocketed after playing "Fa Man". In tears, Joyce (who has a very good memory) recollectetd that after a lapse of 12 years, she finally got an award in Malaysia again. FYI - Joyce  was one of the recipients of "My Favourite Drama Character award" in the 2004 Astro Wah Lai Toi Drawa Awards, for her role as Chan Sum Yuen in "Armed Reaction IV". 3)       Matt Yeung , who was in the same TVB artiste training class as Tavia Yeung, finally snagged “My Favourite TVB Actor” in a Supporting Role. Matt thanked TVB Executive, Catherine Tsang and girlfriend, Lisa Ch’ng.  Matt still has room for improvement and I feel is not consistent in his acting ( a trait that Benjamin Yuen seems to share). However, this award should spur him on to do even better. I’m happy as long as Matt or Raymond Cho gets the award.

Ruco Chan and Nancy Ng winning “My Favourite TVB Actor and Actress” are no surprises. Everyone knows there is no competition.  Had Roger Kwok’s “Dead Wrong” made it to the list of nominees, then Roger is more deserving of the title.  Then again, everyone knows by now that Ruco has a very strong fan base here. Hence, it’s no surprise, Ruco walked away with this honor for the second consecutive year.  This rumored couple (Ruco & Nancy) also  clinched “Favourite TVB Drama Theme Song” and tie with Tracy Chu and Vincent Wong for the “Favourite TVB On-Screen Couple”.  Frankly, this double winners thingy is getting out of hand.  Let’s see…last year, Kristal and Nancy shared the “TVB Favourite Actress” accolade in Malaysia, then 2016 Starhub Awards follow-suit with two “My Favourite TVB Character” – Ruco and Wayne Lai.  Now, we have double winners for “My Favourite TVB On-Screen Couple”. Ridiculous !

I have plenty of lowlights. First off, how the heck could Moon Lau beat Katy Kung for “My Favourite TVB Most Improved Actress” ? I have to admit that Moon Lau does act better , compared to other newbies but definitely not in the same league as Katy. I feel sorry for Katy.  Now you wonder why all the good ones have left.

It’s even more preposterous when Grace grabbed the “My Favourite TVB Drama Character” for her role in “Blue Veins”. Are you telling me that she is better than even her bf, uncle Kelvin ? This win is too “forced”.  Also, for God’s sake, brush-up on your verbal skills please, Grace !  In her acceptance speech, she said something which is not funny and ended-up laughing at her own joke.  After her “粉身碎骨” idiom blunder, the girl still has not learnt.   

I know ..I know…Ali Lee is Sandy’s new pet. Ali’s acting is not bad, to be honest. However, she didn’t shine in the legal drama, “Law Dis-Order”.  The real pillar behind the success of this tv series is actually Joey Liu Kai Chi and Alex Fong.  As expected,Joey Liu and Alex Fong were sidelined. Jeez !

I was surprised when I read in FB a few days before the award ceremony that so-called “Hollywood Rising Star” (as described by his Malaysian fans), Phillip Ng will be heading to Malaysia. I feared the worst but then again, I thought “ no…surely TVB is not that crazy to pull this stunt – I mean, giving an award to Philip”.  I pretended that he is just here to perform martial arts skills or something (although my other skeptical frens kept telling me –“just you wait and see”). And yes,  WTF ! TVB gave him the same award as Ali and Grace and Sisley ! Unbelievably “porky” !

And let’s not forget Sisley. I agree that she has toned down her irritating voice in “Presumed Accident” and I noticed progress in the acting department but let’s face it, we have other more deserving candidates – Bosco Wong, Louis Cheung, Rosina Lam, Alice Chan,  Alex Fong, Joey Liu, Raymond Wong and Raymond Cho…to name a few. I’m fine with the rest of the winners -Tracy Chu, Vincent Wong, Mandy Wong, Natalie (one of my fave low profile talented actresses), Grace WONG, Eliza Sam, Koni Looi and Jonathan Cheung (who has also come a long way). 

Lastly, I am extremely disappointed with the result of “My Favourite TVB Hosts in a Variety Program.” How can TVB not award this to 6Wing, CKwan and Do Do Cheng ?!! This trio is simply phenomenal, yet snubbed ! Grrrr…..enough said!
