Days leading to 名媛望族's event in Malaysia must have been a nerve wrecking experience for Tavia’s fans, especially after her last minute pull out from the Shanghai TV festival. Fighting fatigue and bone spurs on the neck, Tavia still made an effort to head to Genting last Saturday with the rest of “Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles” mates. The audience is largely made-up of senior citizens who openly displayed their affections for veteran star, Damian Lau. I thought Tavia would be the star attraction, along with Kenneth but surprisingly,Tavia only performed 2 songs ! And it goes without saying that Tavia sang her “signature tune “ yet again - “終身美麗.” Tavia and Rebecca also attempted the latest K-pop craze – “Gwiyomi”. Cute ? Not really. The visibly exhausted Kenneth is another crowd favorite, judging from fans’ reaction but his singing is as bad as Rebecca’s. In a deadpan tone, he rendered Leon’s techno hits – “Sugar in the marmalade” and “越夜越有機”, with disastrous results. When it was Sammy Shum’s turn to rock and roll, he did not let us down with his rich and broad vocal range !! I would sign-up this dude in a heartbeat if I owned a record company ! He effortlessly hit the high notes and stage presence was incredible for a noob. He is certainly the next star to watch out for ! Let me tell ya, Sammy is pretty accommodating too. He will never turn away anyone that approaches him for pix.
Former ATV starlet and model, Elena Kong is definitely gaining more popularity since switching camp to TVB. Her performance must have been the best in “SSSS”, followed by Mary Hon. Elena is cheeky in-person and attractive, too. I believe “Drenched” (original singer : Wanting) must have been a massive hit in HK. It made it to LF’s concert run down recently and now, Elena is singing the same song, too. Personally, I find it boring and the lyrics (“When you kissed me on that street, I kissed you back You held me in your arms, I held you in mine” ) is oh-so-corny ! Credit goes to Elena for successfully firing-up the crowd with her good-humored and sexist teasing. Her short and suggestive dance sequence with Sammy was so hubba-hubba hot ! Elena will be gracing our tv screen soon when “Triumph in the skies II” airs in mid July.
As for Rebecca, I wasn’t impressed with her acting nor singing. Of all the current TVB “fa-dan” with atrocious Cantonese, only JJ Jia (doubtful of seeing her in TVB production again after she severed ties with Nat Chan) and Oceane Zhu showed potential…the rest may have the looks but not the acting chops. Rebecca is not even pretty, to be begin with. After her mediocre performance in “SSSS”, I’m not certain whether TVB is still keen to promote her. Mary Hon is another veteran artiste that I really admire (not that many left in TVB now). I was shocked when she mentioned that 80s tearjerker drama (“Yesterday’s glitter” aka “京華春夢”) was her second tv series. OMG !! Mary was already so darn good as the scheming antagonist in this drama ! Mary started off as a trainee dancer in RTV (Damian was also attached to the same tv station then). Mary caught viewers’ attention with her epic performance in “Yesterday’s Glitter” but at the same time, incurred the wrath of Liza Wang’s fans, who were so absorbed with the plot of this engaging drama and really treated Mary as Liza's love rival. Chatted briefly with Mary when she was here in April to shoot “Outbound Love” (单恋双城). I found out it was Mary姐’s first ever visit to Malaysia (Penang) and she lamented that she will not have time to tour KL during “SSSS” stage show in Genting as they had to fly back to HK the next day. Up close, Mary姐 is nice and classy ! On stage, she exudes such charm ! Both she and Damian goes a long way and the chemistry is pretty apparent during their interaction and duet. Can’t say the same for Liza Wang, such a snob in-person ! Damian shared amusing and interesting accounts of his showbiz career and pleased the audience with theme songs from his classic dramas. After the show draws to a close, I realized the one with star billing for the night is actually Damian. Ma Ming (Kenneth) and Tavia only play second fiddle to Damian. Despite average singing (although some have given their best shot), average skit and minimal costume changes, it still turns out to be a fun and entertaining nite for all.
